2024/04/21 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2024: Dutch Round / Sunday - Superpole Race & Race 2

Tough Assen weekend ends with a solid top 10

On Sunday afternoon, Dominique Aegerter found his way back into the fast lane on a dry track and finished seventh after a strong performance.

Blue skies, albeit at very chilly three degrees in the morning, gave hope for a dry race Sunday. This proved to be the case, at least for the day's Superbike sessions, although the sky above the TT Circuit in the north of the Netherlands darkened ominously at lunchtime. Apart from a few raindrops, there were no changeable conditions as it was in the previous days.

After an unsuccessful Superpole on Saturday morning, Dominique Aegerter faced a difficult task in the sprint race as he wanted to improve his grid position for the second main race of the weekend. After ten laps, however, he had to settle with 14th place. This meant that the Yamaha rider had to start the second main race from the seventh row again in the afternoon, but immediately after the start he sensed that a lot was possible and quickly began a race to catch up. Seventh place was the reward for his efforts.

Grid position 19 / Superpole Race: P14 / Grid position 19 / Race 2: P7

"We went into the Superpole race with the intention of finishing in the top nine. But with only ten laps, that's almost impossible to achieve, considering where I started from on the grid. That's why I had to start from P19 again in the second main race, because I couldn't get past 14th place in Superpole Race. I rode a strong race in the afternoon because I was able to make up a lot of positions. My start was good because, unlike when you start from the second row, you can overtake a lot of riders coming from seventh row right at the start. That spurred me on and so I pushed hard on the first few laps. This track also helps even more to overtake other rider in different places."

"A few raindrops fell at times, which intimidated me a little and I didn't know how hard I could push. But the good thing was that I was fast and was able to catch up with the front groups. I finished seventh, just five seconds behind the race winner's time, and scored decent points. Nevertheless, I'm sorry about my qualifying, because we still have to improve a lot in the wet. The next race is not until mid-June. Hopefully we will have two good tests in Misano and Cremona during the break so that we are back where we should be in Misano. Finally, I would like to congratulate my team-mate Remy Gardner on his first podium in Superbike World Championship. He was very strong all weekend and I think that's down to the efforts of the whole team."
