2022/11/19 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Australian Round / Saturday's Race 1 Report

Fifth in first ever Supersport rain race

On Saturday in Australia, Dominique Aergerter quickly found his feet in unfamiliar conditions.

A change in the weather on Saturday morning changed everything at Phillip Island. After a rain shower, the track began to dry out before Superpole. In the time chase for the best grid positions, almost the entire competition switched to slicks shortly before the end, while Dominique Aegerter finished the session without a pit stop.

Shortly before the first race of the weekend in southern Australia, the next downpour hit Phillip Island. It was declared a "wet race" by the race organizers. So, for newly crowned two-time world champion Dominique Aegerter, it was the first encounter with a rain-soaked track over the full race distance. However, Aegerter, who initially dropped to sixth place, quickly found a feeling and confidence and began to work his way forward.

Lying in third position, he was just able to save a scary situation in the slow turn four but lost a place in the process. Later, Aegerter was also overtaken by his toughest rival this year, Lorenzo Baldassarri from Italy. At the finish, the 32-year-old rider from Berne was nevertheless satisfied with fifth place.

The final race of the season will start on Sunday at 14:30 local time (04:30 CET). It can be followed via live stream on the internet platform of the Austrian rights holder ServusTV.com. "Eurosport 2" will begin its broadcast 15 minutes before the start of the race.

Grid position 4th / Race 1: P5

"I would have liked better weather for my second last race in Supersport category. The conditions today were typical for Phillip Island, but at the same time very strange. In Superpole the track was half wet, half dry. That is why we started with a rain tyre for the front and an intermediate rear. With this combination I was up to three seconds faster than everyone else at times, until five minutes before the end when many came in to change for a slick at the rear. They had a clear advantage because the track was drying more and more, while I could not make any more gains. In the end, my time was still good enough for fourth place on the grid. In the race it came to a premiere for me because it was my first race in rainy conditions in Supersport World Championship. It was also the first time I rode a full race distance with the Pirelli rain tyres and with a rain setup. I think, under these circumstances, fifth place is not so bad. Unfortunately, we did not achieve the podium we were aiming for."

"It was still a great race in which we fought for third place for a long time. In the last five laps it started to dry very slightly, and my tyres started to slip a bit. It was not easy to hold the line and use the entire width of the track down to the last centimetre. Of course, I would have liked to give the team another podium, but I am also happy with P5. Tomorrow, however, we have another chance and until then we will work hard and try to find a few more little things. My crew is also top motivated at the last race weekend. It also remains to be seen what the weather will be like, because as we know, it can change here constantly and by the minute. Nevertheless, I will try to enjoy my last Supersport race and do my best to end this incredible season with another highlight."
