2021/05/02 - FIM MotoE™ World Cup: Gran Prémio de Espana / Race Report

Title winning campaign starts with podium in Jerez

A last-minute change of schedule could not upset Dominique Aegerter when he brought home second place on Sunday afternoon.

Originally, the opening race of the 2021 MotoE™ World Cup was scheduled to take place this morning but due to a longer interruption during Moto2 warm-up, the organizers were forced to move the first of this year’s electric bike series after all three races of the grand prix categories. This change of schedule caused Dominique Aegerter slightly worries, as he had some adjustment difficulties during the afternoon sessions on the previous days when conditions were warmer at this time of day. However, his technical crew managed to adjust the Energica bike to the changed conditions almost perfectly. Leaving the line with a good reaction, Aegerter ultimately laid the foundations for a successful start to the new Cup season when he was on course for the podium after just a few corners.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Dynavolt Intact GP, Energica), P2 +0.419:

"It was definitely a successful start to the Cup. A second place in the first race is always positive. That is why I am satisfied. But this podium was not easy to clinch. I had to give everything during the eight laps and there were also two or three scary moments when the front almost folded. At the start I saw that the guys in front of me that they were very careful. That is why I was able to start good overtaking manoeuvres and therefore I found myself quickly in third position and a bit later in second. In the last lap I prepared well to be able to launch another attack. But in one corner I was leaning too much and almost highsided. Fortunately, I did not lose control of the bike and was able to push till the finish line. Unfortunately, it was no longer possible to catch Zaccone."

"But after a somewhat more difficult weekend than we had during winter testing, this result is certainly a good start. The important thing was to finish the race and to score as many points as possible. As we saw last year, it will again be a question of finishing always amongst the top spots in every race and, if possible, always on the podium. In doing so, then you will have a good chance of playing a role in the fight for overall victory. But first, I am looking forward to the next race in two weeks' time at Le Mans, where we will be back in full attack mode. After that there will be a few circuits in the calendar that are completely new territory for MotoE and where some other riders will have less experience than me. In these races it will be important to finish ahead of my fiercest title rivals. Today one of them as well as some others also lost a lot of points because of crashing."

"But what I am most happy about is the fact that I was finally able to race again after the long break. So, a big thanks to Dorna and the Jerez circuit operators for being able to organize anything at all in these difficult times. Finally, I would like to thank my team for their great work. They have done a super job, as we were able to improve again despite initial problems due to changed conditions. We also coped well with the last-minute postponement of the race from this morning to the afternoon when the temperatures of many were warmer. Thanks guys, I hope we continue like this next time."
