2021/05/23 - FIM Supersport World Championship: Aragon Round / Sunday Report

Aragon weekend concluded with fifth place on a rainy Sunday

After narrowly missing out victory on the previous day, Dominique Aegerter was also hoping for a dry track on Sunday. In mixed conditions, he at least managed damage limitation regarding the championship in the second race.

After the weather showed up from its best side on the previous days at Spain’s MotorLand Aragón circuit, rainy conditions were the big spoiler from Dominique Aegerter's point of view on Sunday. Despite his immense experience, this resulted in many unknown factors for the 30-year-old. Due to the uncertain weather conditions, the decision was only made at the last moment to use intermediate tyres. However, this option was a completely new territory for Aegerter. It therefore took a few laps before Aegerter was able to build up a feeling for these unknown tyres at a track that was gradually drying out.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6), Race 2: P5 +17.785:

"Today, I have made my very first experience with intermediate tyres in my career. In addition, it rained a little bit every now and then. The conditions for this race were therefore by no means easy. Nevertheless, I started well, but unfortunately Philipp Öttl crashed in front of me in the second corner. In addition, the track was still quite wet at the beginning. Therefore, all riders who opted for rain tyres had advantages and could pull away first. For me, however, it was difficult to bring the tyres up to temperature. The front tyre did not want to play along at all. When the track gradually dried out, I was finally able to go faster and overtake two or three other riders. But the conditions were exceedingly difficult until the end."

"In the end, all I would have needed was a practice session with intermediates and in these track conditions so that I could have built up confidence more quickly. It was also difficult to assess the durability of these tyres in the wet. Ultimately, I have to be happy with fifth place, although I would have hoped for much more today. For that, however, it would have had to be dry though, I think we would have made it onto the podium again. But after this first race weekend in Supersport World Championship, the most important thing is that we now know where our strengths and weaknesses are. So, we now can focus on that, even though there is not much time to make big changes before the next race. But based on the knowledge we have gathered this weekend, we certainly will be able to start stronger from the outset in Estoril."
