2021/09/03 - FIM Supersport World Championship: French Round / FP Report

Fastest on Friday at home round in Magny Cours

Dominique Aegerter pulled out all the stops on Friday afternoon to finish the opening practice sessions in France at the top of the timesheets.

On Friday morning, some overnight rain showers caused temporary uncertainty at the beginning for the seventh Supersport World Championship meeting of the season. Despite some damp patches at the start of the free practice one, all teams and riders nevertheless opted to immediately start their preparation for race no. 13 and 14 this Saturday and Sunday with slick tyres.

Eighth place in FP1 should have been only an interim setback for the current overall leader Dominique Aegerter because during the second session of the day, he left no doubt from the outset who is the master of the Magny-Cours circuit, although Aegerter was only allowed to get to know the demanding circuit in the region of Burgund last June for the first time. With a 1'41.314, the 30-year-old Yamaha rider was only slightly faster than his first rival in the combined practice times as his fastest lap time has been cancelled for slow riding in final minutes of FP2.

FP1: P8 - 1´41.988 / FP2: P1 - 1´41.314

"For me it is nice to race here in Magny-Cours. Especially because I consider this event as my home race in WSSP. Driving by my own car and arriving after a leisurely drive of about five hours is worth to count it as a home game. In addition, we can still enjoy a little summer feeling because of the beautiful weather these days. In the morning, however, the track was still a bit damp at some places though, we were able to go out with slicks straight away. The weather forecast for the next few days nevertheless promises excitement, as it could rain slightly on Saturday afternoon but is supposed to be dry again on Sunday."

"Our test here two months ago paid off in every respect. So straight away a big thanks again to my team, as I did not know Magny-Cours before then. So, it was certainly a help to start the weekend with some useful data and some track knowledge. On top of that, our technicians at Ten Kate Racing Products again did an incredible job during the short break bringing some new stuff which, from my point of view, make a significant improvement. So, my thanks to them in this matter as well. Now, I am looking forward to the races to see where we are after this update. Apart from that, today’s sessions went flawlessly. We tried both tyre options and we were very fast on both. At the end of the day our lap time was very strong either, as well as we can be confident for the races thanks to a consistent race pace. Moreover, it is always good and promising to start a race weekend when you finish Friday as fastest overall."
