2021/10/15 - FIM Supersport World Championship: Argentinean Round / FP Report

All green on Friday in warm Argentina

Dominique Aegerter was able to quickly get grips with the unfamiliar San Juan track. In doing so, he started the second last race weekend of the season according to plans.

After a huge sandstorm on Thursday afternoon, the track operators at the Circuito de San Juan Villicum did a good job, so that grip conditions were good again when free practice sessions opened the weekend on Friday morning. Once more, Dominique Aegerter impressed by showing his high level of performance during FP1, setting fastest lap time as a newcomer to the South American track.

In much better conditions in the afternoon, the 31-year-old rider from the canton of Bern, who can top an incredibly strong season with the Supersport World Championship title this weekend, was able to improve his time from FP1 by 0.3 seconds. This means that the Yamaha rider ended up in third place overall after both free practice sessions.

SRF zwei will be showing both weekend’s Supersport races live on Saturday and Sunday, both starting at 6:15 pm each.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6)
FP1: P1 - 1´43.125 / FP2: P3 - 1´42.833

"After my first track inspection on Thursday, I was looking forward to ride at this track. As expected, San Juan offers a lot of fun riding the Yamaha R6. Before the first practice, however, everyone was talking about grip issues though, that was why I approached the first laps in the morning a bit more cautiously. But the situation was not so bad, as it was seen in terms of lap times. This was then confirmed during FP2, as the lap times were already faster than the existing lap record. Apart from that, this layout suits my riding perfectly and I was certainly able to benefit somehow from my experience when it came down to getting to know the track. In addition, we gathered very valuable information in today’s sessions, which will help us to be optimally prepared going into Superpole and the first race on Saturday afternoon."

"After setting the fastest time in FP1, it obviously may have looked like that we were quickly settled well with this track. But in the afternoon, we did not manage to make a similarly big jump compared to some others. In this matter, we need to investigate further in which area we still need to improve, whether it is the choice of lines or my riding style, the tyres or the gear ratio. By Saturday we have to come up with something to close the gap to Cluzel. But I trust, as always completely my experienced crew, that we will be on a par again for Superpole at the latest."

"There is a lot at stake for us this weekend. We cannot let ourselves get rattled, as we foremost have to continue working calmly and with concentration. We know that we can finish something great in the next few days. Therefore, we will take things step by step, although our goal remains the same. As always, I am going into the races with the mindset of fighting for victory, or at least to be on the podium. The sooner the decision is made, the better it would be for me, of course, because then a big weight would fall off my shoulders. After that, the pressure would be off, and I could ride freely and easily again. For the time being, however, we have to stay calm and not make any mistakes. I think that the mentality that we Swiss and also the Dutch have will help us. We know how to stay calm and collected and still work with focus."
