2022/03/22 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Estoril Test / Day one

Fast start to second WorldSSP test

At the start of the second test in 2022, Dominique Aegerter came close to his Superpole lap time from last year, when the Estoril track was still dry.

Reigning Supersport champion Dominique Aegerter and his Dutch Ten Kate team apparently are having no luck with the weather in their preparations for the season, which will go green in just two weeks' time. Day one of a two-day test at the Circuito do Estoril was again marked by changeable conditions. After a dry start, the dark skies above the circuit outside of Lisbon opened their floodgates shortly afterwards.

During the one-hour session in dry conditions, however, Aegerter set the benchmark with a 1'40.485. However, an early crash in the rain during the second outing meant an early end to the day. The Yamaha rider remained unharmed except for a few bruises, and his bike did not suffer any major damage too. Heavy rain in the further course of Tuesday, however, prevented reasonable work on track. The test will continue on Wednesday with the second and final day.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6):

"Unfortunately, the weather has not welcomed us very kindly in Estoril either. However, this morning the conditions were still very good, as the track was dry, and the grip level were okay. We started strong and I was immediately fast as hell. At the end of the session, I was just 0.2 seconds off my Superpole here back in May last year. That was actually a super start for our second test. In the end, however, it was only 17, 18 laps that we could ride in the dry again, because it started to rain at noon. The second session already started on a rain-soaked track and unfortunately it was done for me after only five laps."

"It was a small fall in which I banged my right hip a bit. It is not too bad, but still we ended our day prematurely. It was my first crash with the Yamaha R6. Because of the heavy rain in the afternoon, it also would have made less sense to try anything or risk unnecessary. Nevertheless, it was not boring in the afternoon, because we used to time for some interview appointments. For Tuesday, however, the weather forecasts are not any better. Nevertheless, I hope that my body recovers well during the night, so that if it should be dry, I can attack again. There is still a lot of work to do."
