2022/05/01 - FIM MotoE™ World Cup 2022: Gran Premio de Espana / Sunday - Race 2

Second podium missed by a hair's breadth on Sunday in hot Jerez

After race two at the MotoE season opener in Andalusia, Dominique Aegerter was upset about himself due to a costly mistake on the last lap.

On Sunday, summer has arrived in southern Spain. With temperatures just under 30 degrees, spectacular motorsport was on offer at the Circuito de Jerez. For the first time in two years, there were no restrictions on the number of spectators allowed. So, there was a great atmosphere in the grandstands and the paddock.

Unlike in the first race of the weekend on Saturday, Dominique Aegerter was involved in a fierce battle with his toughest contenders in the championship for victory right from the start this afternoon. The leading position changed almost every lap, sometimes even several times during a lap. At the beginning of the last lap, the 31-year-old rider from the canton of Bern wanted to start a pre-decisive manoeuvre, being a bit later on the brakes than Miquel Pons, who was leading the pack at that point. But Aegerter lost two positions in the process, but he wanted to try again in the last corner before the finish line.

The series continues in two weeks at the Grand Prix de France at Le Mans.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Dynavolt Intact GP, Energica)
Grid Position: P5 / Race 2: P4 +0.488:

"Even though we did not make it onto the podium today, we showed that we are among the best. Nevertheless, it is a bit of a shame that I made that mistake in the last corner. I thought our group consisted only three riders. But Casadei caught up quickly and was able to overtake me there. I am a bit angry with myself for giving away the podium like that. That was clearly my fault, I am sorry for the team. But MotoE is a special affair. In a race with only eight laps, it is difficult to prepare a strategy. Nevertheless, my plan was to be first on the last lap so that I had a chance of winning today. That was why I overtook Pons in the first corner of the last lap, but I went a bit wide, and I lost two places in the process."

"I still thought I could attack again, but that was no longer possible. I would have needed another lap or two to try again. But that is MotoE like it is. Despite a good performance in the race, I am a little disappointed about fourth place. On the other hand, it is very important that we take these points with us. In two weeks at Le Mans, we will try to be at the front again. Until then I will do my preparation in the best possible way but it is a shame about the mistake on the last lap, even though we have still twelve races ahead of us in which we can get more out of it than we did today. A big thank you to the whole Intact team for their help and great work this weekend."
