2022/06/12 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Emiglia-Romagna Round / Sunday - Race 2

Dominique Aegerter outshines sunny Misano

The 31-year-old Swiss rider continues his impressive winning streak. In an incredibly strong finish, he edged out his fiercest rival Lorenzo Baldassarri in the second race on Sunday.

Bright sunshine, lots of guests in the paddock and full grandstands with many fans from nearby Switzerland created a great atmosphere at the Misano World Circuit on the second day of racing during the visit of the Supersport World Championship in Italy.

After his fabulous lap time in Superpole on Saturday morning, Dominique Aegerter again started from pole position today. The early stages were a mirror image of yesterday's race start, when Italian Nicolo Bulega again took the hole-shot. But three corners later the Ducati rider made a mistake that affected Aegerter who dropped down a few positions. But it only took a lap or two for the Yamaha rider to take up the chase of leader Lorenzo Baldassarri in second place. What seemed almost impossible, Aegerter managed again, when he once more outlined his first opponent in the title fight in the last lap with an irrepressible will to win.

FIM Supersport World Championship continues in four weeks with the fifth meeting of the season at Donington Park in Great Britain.

"I am overwhelmed. It certainly was not easy to complete this weekend with two wins. Okay, yesterday I was a bit lucky, but today's victory gives me great satisfaction, because in the last laps it was again a tough battle with Baldassarri. He was very strong today; his pace was incredibly high and consistent. Most of the time we set lap times in the range of 1'37 high to 1'38.0, which was not easy to control in this heat and you had to be careful with the tyres because of the high asphalt temperatures. At the start I got away well, but again Bulega was ahead of me going into turn one. But then he made a mistake that also affected me. Without this mistake he would certainly have been in the lead with us. Towards the end of the race, it became very exciting again because I was only able to really attack at the end. I think I timed my race well and chose the right moment for the decisive manoeuvre. This victory is very important for us and the 25 points from today count double for the championship."

"It is hard for me to understand what is happening at the moment. Since the first race in Aragón, where I finished second, I have won for the seventh time in a row now though, I am not thinking about records. Apart from that, Misano was another very successful weekend with pole position and a new all-time lap record. A string of successes like this does not happen on its own. As a rider, I always have to give 100 percent and be fully focused. On the other hand, the team has the mammoth task of ensuring that the material is in top condition every time, including tyres and everything else. The level in Supersport World Championship has risen incredibly. That is why the overall package always has to be at a high level. I think that in terms of riding we are at a very high level, which I showed again here. But we have to stay calm, stay focused, because there will be tracks where other manufacturers might be stronger or where some riders have more of a lead than at other tracks. We have one goal, and that is to win the title, and for that we are taking our tasks step by step. Nevertheless, tonight we will celebrate a bit with some cocktails. Misano is the best place for that, to finish a super weekend accordingly."
