2022/06/26 - FIM MotoE™ World Cup 2022: TT Assen / Sunday - Race 2

Second in a chaotic race

Dominique Aegerter had to settle for second place on Sunday in Assen after the race had to be stopped halfway through the distance.

Unstable weather was the reason why the schedule was thrown into disarray on Sunday afternoon. While the final preparations for the second MotoE™ race of the weekend were underway, it began to drizzle slightly on the main straight. As a result, the start was postponed and a warm-up lap was inserted, from which the field returned with their hands up. This meant that the rain was heavier at the back parts of the track and there was a further delay. The race was shortened to six laps.

After some back and forth regarding tyre choice, Dominique Aegerter got away well from the line but lined up in second position in turn one. One lap later he was pushed out of second place by his fiercest opponent in the fight for overall victory, Brazilian rider Eric Granado. While Granado was in the lead a bit later, Aegerter did not hesitate for long and snatched second place from Italian rider Mattia Casadei and took up the pursuit of Granado. However, in the next moment the red flag was shown, and the race was scored according to the standings after lap three.

Grid position: Pole / Race 2: P2

"It was a crazy race day at Assen today, with light rain delaying the start twice. The first time the chaos was still manageable and there was a warm-up lap, but in this one we saw that there was more rain in some sections. The start procedure was cancelled again, and the chaos increased because nobody knew if rain tyres were the right choice or not. In any case, everyone was looking at what the others were doing. In the end, however, everyone started on slicks, even though it was drizzling slightly everywhere. It was not easy to judge the track conditions. For that reason, I did not want to take the lead in order to find out the limit for the others."

"Last but not least, the red flag came at the wrong time for me. I had just moved into second place and wanted to keep attacking as I wanted to further extend my lead in the points table. In the end there were only half points given today, it was a strange race at all. But I got back on the podium in second place, which is certainly not bad. Now we have four races to go, two each in Spielberg and Misano, where I like the respective track very much and where we will certainly do our best again to be finish the season on top too. But for now, we are going into a longer break until Spielberg with a good feeling."
