2022/07/17 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: UK Round / Sunday - Race 2

Donington return closed with outstanding double victory

31-year-old Swiss Dominique Aegerter was also by far the strongest on track on Sunday in the final stages of the second race at the series visit to Great Britain.

The second race of the weekend at the traditional English circuit Donington Park started similarly to yesterday afternoon. Dominique Aegerter got the best start and entered turn one in first position but was pushed out of the lead by Italian Nicolo Bulega before the start of the slow section at the back of the track on the first lap. Shortly after the first third of the track, Aegerter even slipped back to fourth place. But it was not long before the Dutch Ten Kate Team Yamaha rider overtook first Federico Caricasulo and then Bulega again.

At this point, Aegerter's first rival in the points table, Italian Lorenzo Baldassarri, had built up a small lead of just under a second, which obviously motivated the 31-year-old Swiss from the canton of Bern in particular. With the fastest race lap on the third-last lap of the 19-lap total, Aegerter reduced the gap to the leader virtually in the blink of an eye, overtaking him on the same lap at the same place where he had passed Bulega a lap earlier, and storming towards to his ninth consecutive victory of the season.

In doing so, the reigning champion and current points leader matched the record for the most consecutive victories in Supersport World Championship today. This was held yet by Andrea Locatelli from Italy.

The Supersport World Championship continues in two weeks at the Autodrom Most in the Czech Republic.

Grid position: Pole / Race 2: Winner

"It is an indescribable feeling to have won nine races in a row, I am very happy about that. Today's race again offered a lot of excitement. In the 19 laps we had great battles with different manufacturers and also with familiar opponents. The competition has increased incredibly. It was interesting to see where the strengths of the other manufacturers are. In some places at the track, they were faster than us. That is why overtaking was not so easy today. This mainly affected Caricasulo and Bulega, while I knew from yesterday's race exactly where I could pass Baldassarri. I waited for the right moment to be able to execute my moves cleanly, and that paid off because we were on top of the podium as winners for the umpteenth time."

"Even though it might look different from the outside, but so far this year I have not had an easy time in any race. So far, there has always been a difficult phase at some point. Last year, on the other hand, it was often the case that I was able to pull away a little right after the start and then it is a bit easier with a small lead over the first chaser, but the effort is also greater in terms of concentration. However, I think the show is definitely better this year if the Supersport races remain exciting right to the end. And from my side, all I can say is that I always have to give everything for the win."

"The fact that I matched Andrea Locatelli's 2020 record today is like a dream come true for me. It is also the result of our hard work over the winter months when we prepared super for the new season. I trained hard and the team made the bike very competitive. That is what makes racing fun, and when I see the chequered flag first, it is an incredible satisfaction. So, I cannot thank everyone who helps us this often enough. But a special thanks goes to my team and our sponsors. In two weeks in Most, we will try to continue like this and extend our lead in the championship. There are two races again, so something could change in this statistic either again."
