2022/09/11 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: French Round / Sunday - Rennen 2

Masterclass win on Sunday

Dominique Aegerter almost outdid himself when he was able to close a big gap to the leading group in the second race of the World Championship’s visit to France and egded out his fiercest title rival Lorenzo Baldassarri in a rousing duel in the final stages.

At the winner’s ceremony, 31-year-old Dominique Aegerter from Switzerland was beaming with the sun, and rightly so, because until shortly before the end of the first third of the race, the race was going on less to his liking. Similar to Saturday afternoon, the Yamaha rider had to deal with many troublesome opponents in the early stages. But as soon as he was able to pull away from them, he found his rhythm, which was also incredibly fast and consistent.

In doing so, Aegerter managed to turn around the proceedings completely as he closed the gap to the leading group with Baldassarri, Federico Caricasulo and Frenchman Jules Cluzes in huge strides. On the third last lap, it was time for Aegerter to attack the leader Baldassarri, challenging him for the top spot. Aegerter was then able to skilfully fend off all of the Italian's counterattacks until Baldassarri made a mistake on the last lap and crashed. On the podium, Aegerter exuberantly celebrated his tenth win of the season.

The Supersport World Championship continues in two weeks with the meeting at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya just outside the vibrant capital of Catalonia.

Grid position: 5th / Race 2: WINNER

"That was an incredibly important victory, I am very happy about it! As yesterday, the race got off to a very laborious start because my starting position on the second row was far from ideal. So, it was a tough job for me right from the start, especially as a couple of other riders pushed me quite far to the outside a few times in the first few laps. As a result, I dropped back to eighth place. Then I noticed that the riders in front started to push and pull away. Of course, I wanted to make contact as quickly as possible, but they were riding at a very high pace. Eventually I managed to close the gap, which was up to three seconds at times but my pace was incredible. I did not give up the race at any point but fought until the end. When I caught up with the leaders, I was also able to quickly take the lead and defend it to the finish."

"The vattle with Baldassarri in the last laps was very exciting. He has a very fast bike, while I had advantages on the brakes. But on every straight he was always almost next to me. “Balda” is a strong rider, and he is in a good team. We will surely see some more races like today’s one until the end of the season. After yesterday's third place, which was certainly not a bad result, this victory has even greater significance. But the most important thing is that we were able to extend our lead in the championship a little bit. Considering that we had limited track time during Friday’s free sessions because of the changeable weather, my Ten Kate team did a great job again. Also, today I had a bike with which I felt very comfortable. After this weekend I need some time to relax, because the last ten days were very exhausting, especially emotionally. In addition, the MotoGP test has also taken its toll physically. But before the well-deserved break, there will be a small celebration tonight. Finally, a big thank you to everyone. I mean my team first and foremost, but also the many fans who came to Magny-Cours to cheer us on and gave us a super nice weekend."
