The 32-year-old Swiss celebrated his biggest success of his career so far on Saturday when he took fourth place to make himself the old and new World Champion in the intermediate category of the WorldSBK series early on.

After a somewhat difficult start to the second last race weekend of the season at the Indonesian island of Lombok, Dominique Aegerter was nevertheless one of the contenders for pole position in Superpole. With third place on the starting grid, he achieved what was his objective going into the third-last race of the season at 12 noon local time.

Coming from the front row of the starting grid, Aegerter lost a position as early as on the first lap and even dropped back to seventh place in the meantime. The title-deciding scene occurred on lap three when his only rival, Italian Lorenzo Baldassarri, crashed and had to retire. Aegerter then rode a controlled race to the chequered flag, battling his way to fourth place at the line and successfully fulfilling his mission to defend the title.

After winning the WorldSSP title last year, this is the third championship for the motorcycle professional from the canton of Bern, after Aegerter also won the MotoE™ World Cup 2022 last September.

The second race of the weekend will start on Sunday at 12:00 local time (05:00 CET). It is to be watched via live stream on the internet platform of Austrian rights holder ServusTV.com. "Eurosport 2" will begin its broadcast ten minutes before the start of the race.

"I am over the moon! We did a fantastic job this year and won the world championship for the second time three races before the end of the season. For me it is even the second title this year, in addition to the MotoE World Cup. With the Ten Kate team I have celebrated 15 wins and a total of 17 podiums so far in 2022. The worst result was a fourth place in today's race. It really has been an indescribably great season and for me a second dream has come true with successfully defending the title. I would like to dedicate it to my family, my friends, Ten Kate Racing and all the sponsors and supporters of the team, as well as to my own such as IXS, Lanz Anliker, Frankhauser, Euronics, etc.. They all helped me a lot to get where I am now. A big thank you to all of them and I hope we can continue our collaboration in a similar way next year. At the moment I feel more than ready to move up to Superbike World Championship. I cannot wait to test with the GRT team for the first time in December."

"Above that it is a great honour to be mentioned in the same breath as very big names in this category. We have achieved very great success this year and rewritten many statistics. But our goal from the start was to successfully defend the title. At mid-season, we already had a lead of around 60 points in the championship. But due to a crash that was not our fault, this quickly shrank to five points. But after the break we fought back all the more determinedly and extended the cushion to 72 points before going into today's race and then, we closed the bag. I think that is a really great achievement. It also includes all these pole positions and fastest race laps. It takes the rider to pull it off, but it is not possible all by yourself. We are a big, racing-minded family and a big, very experienced team who have helped me achieve this. This title is the twelfth for Ten Kate Racing and I am proud to have contributed to it twice. I will always remember that. Of course, also that I won two championships in one year. We now can enjoy the last three races of the season more because we no longer have any pressure. But I want to finish them in the style of a champion. We will give our best every time and fight for victory if possible. For now, I am looking forward to tomorrow's race, but it will not be easy because the other manufacturers have a bit of an advantage here, while we struggle a bit with constant grip level over the distance."
