2023/06/04 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Emilia-Romagna Round / Sunday - Superpole Race & Race 2

Conclusion in Italy not as desired

After a strong performance in race one on Saturday afternoon, Dominique Aegerter wanted to end the Misano weekend in this way. But on Sunday, luck was not always on his side.

It all started with a crash in the sprint race, for which Dominique Aegerter could not do anything when another rider turned into the second corner after the start a bit too over-heated. As a result, the Yamaha rider lost control of his superbike and, to make matters worse, dragged his team mate Remy Gardner into the gravel with him. While Aegerter sprinted to his bike and continued the race in a hopeless position, the race was over for Gardner. Fortunately, he remained uninjured in this nasty crash. On the seventh lap, the race was stopped due to another incident.

Contrary to his intention to improve his starting position for the second main race in the afternoon, the 32-year-old Aegerter dropped down to eleventh spot on the grid, on the fourth row. His start was nevertheless quite good, but the first laps were more turbulent than the Superbike rider, who has shown surprisingly strong performances in his rookie season so far, would have liked. Instead of battling for a possible top-5 result as he did on Saturday, he struggled in the middle of pack over the entire distance. An eleventh place at the end did not meet the expectations of the ambitious Swiss.

On Sunday, the Superpole race over ten laps is on the agenda first, followed by the second main race of the weekend at 2:00 pm. ServusTV will provide full live coverage in German-speaking countries.

"This Sunday was a bit unfortunate from our point of view. I had a good start to the sprint race but crashed in the second corner through no fault of my own. That was a big blow for the team, because Remy was also involved, and the race was gone for him. Fortunately, we both escaped uninjured. What hurt much more was the fact that I had to start from further back for the second race, and as it was to expect, it was all over the place in the first few laps. It was incredibly difficult to overtake, and, besides that, I also lost my confidence a bit."

"From then on it was a disappointing race because we were very confident of playing our role in the top ten. But we just could not deliver our potential. Still, we showed our strengths this weekend, as we did in yesterday's race. We have to build on that. So, a big thank you to my team, who did a fantastic job again. The bike was perfectly prepared for the second race. It is a shame that success did not come today. It would have been a nice end to this stressful weekend. There were many fans and also almost all sponsors of the team here who supported us incredibly. Many thanks for that. Now we have another three-week break in which I will let my hand heal further and then we will go full throttle again in Donington."
